Description

Paroles en Couleur, Rituel et Identité by Philippe Dodard is a vibrant acrylic on canvas that transforms color and abstraction into a meditation on memory, identity, and spiritual resilience. Set against a glowing field of fiery reds, oranges, and electric blues, the elongated figures rise like ceremonial totems, carrying an atmosphere of ritual, presence, and ancestral connection. Dodard’s expressive brushwork and layered impasto surface create a powerful sense of movement and emotional intensity. The abstracted faces and symbolic forms appear suspended between shadow and light, inviting viewers to look beyond the physical image toward deeper narratives of survival, community, and cultural continuity. Each gesture and color relationship evokes a visual language rooted in Haitian spirituality, collective memory, and human endurance. A striking example of contemporary Haitian expressionism, this work reflects Philippe Dodard’s celebrated exploration of social consciousness and the emotional force of color and form. The painting conveys both fragility and strength, transforming pain into a luminous vision of healing and persistence. This artwork is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

About this artist

Philippe Dodard (b. 1954, Port-au-Prince, Haiti) is a Haitian painter, graphic artist, and multidisciplinary creator known for angular, architectonic compositions that organize space without traditional perspective. Trained at the PotoMitan Art School under Jean-Claude “Tiga” Garoute, Patrick Vilaire, and Frido Casimir, he later studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and specialized in graphic design in Bordeaux, France. Dodard’s work blends structure, rhythm, and symbolic abstraction, reflecting his background in graphic design and visual communication. His practice extends beyond painting to include sculpture, ironwork, and jewelry, creating a distinctive modern Haitian aesthetic. His work has been exhibited internationally across Europe and the Americas and has influenced fashion and contemporary art, notably inspiring Donna Karan’s Spring 2012 collection. Today, Dodard’s work is highly sought after for its originality, design clarity, and cross-disciplinary appeal.
