Description
A 1972 oil on board by Haitian master Pauleus Vital depicting a hillside village near Jacmel, with brightly painted houses set among dense tropical greenery. A woman sweeps a dirt path near a stone well in the foreground while two men carry sugarcane through the scene, a composition typical of Vital's detailed renderings of Haitian rural life. Vital, born in Jacmel in 1917, trained as a cabinetmaker and shipbuilder before beginning to paint at 38, joining the Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince at the urging of his half brother, artist Prefete Duffaut. He later returned to Jacmel, where the town and its surrounding countryside remained a central subject in his work. This painting is from the private collection of Myriam F. Nader and was exhibited at Kings Theater in Brooklyn in 2016 in "Diaspora Calling!," presented with the celebrated singer Ms. Lauryn Hill. Presented in its original frame, in good condition consistent with age.

Pauleus Vital, born in 1918 in Jacmel and deceased in 1984, was a skilled cabinetmaker and shipbuilder before he actively joined the Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince in 1958, spurred by the encouragement of his half-brother, Prefete Duffaut. Afterward, he returned to Jacmel, where he passionately continued to paint until his untimely death on June 18, 1984. Today, he stands as one of Haiti's most renowned and influential painters. His artwork is prominently featured in the permanent collections of the Milwaukee Museum of Art, the Waterloo Museum of Art in Iowa, and Ramapo College in Mahwah, New Jersey.
