Description

This vibrant 1951 oil on canvas by Castera Bazile (Haitian, 1923–1966) captures a traditional sugar cane harvesting scene in rural Haiti. Two women operate a wooden press beneath a fruit-bearing tree as figures gather nearby, creating a warm and culturally rich narrative of agrarian life. The composition reflects the dignity of labor and the communal rhythms that define Haiti’s countryside. A founding member of the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince, Bazile is considered one of the pioneering masters of Haitian modern painting. His works are widely collected for their clarity of form, harmonious palette, and authentic portrayal of Haitian daily life. Signed and dated December 26, 1951, this early piece carries important historical significance within mid-century Haitian art. A unique opportunity to acquire a museum-worthy example of early Haitian art history. Sold by a private collector from Miami, Florida, where the artwork will be shipped from.

About this artist

Castera Bazile (1923–1966) was a self-taught Haitian master and early member of the Centre d’Art, joining in 1944 during the rise of modern Haitian art. He is widely regarded as one of Haiti’s most important 20th-century painters. In 1951, Bazile created three murals for the Episcopal Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Port-au-Prince, a landmark commission in Haitian art history. He later exhibited internationally in the United States and Europe. His paintings are known for instinctive compositions, warm harmonious color, and the expressive sincerity of Haitian folk tradition. Gérald Alexis described his work as embodying the “typical sincerity of Haitian folk expression.” Bazile’s work remains highly collectible among museums and private collectors worldwide.
