About this artist
About this artist
Joseph Jean-Laurent was born in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti, in 1893 and died in 1976. A self-taught painter, he worked as a tailor in Port-au-Prince and Grande Rivière du Nord before beginning to paint in 1965 at the age of 72. He joined the Centre d’Art in 1974, just two years before his death, and quickly gained recognition for his distinctive and personal style. His work reflects a direct, intuitive approach rooted in observation and lived experience. Jean-Laurent’s paintings are held in major collections, including the Musée d’Art Nader in Haiti, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Waterloo Museum of Art in Iowa, and the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. Due to his late start and limited period of production, his works remain scarce on the art market. Today, Joseph Jean-Laurent’s paintings are highly sought after by collectors for their rarity, authenticity, and unique place within the history of Haitian art.
