Description

This original acrylic on canvas by Claude Dambreville, titled Emillita, presents a sophisticated and deeply personal portrait composition centered on themes of motherhood, identity, and generational continuity. The work brings together multiple female figures and a child in a carefully orchestrated arrangement that merges portraiture with symbolic and emotional resonance. Dambreville’s refined technique is evident in the smooth modeling of faces, subtle tonal gradations, and a controlled, harmonious palette of warm earth tones, soft blues, and muted neutrals. The figures are rendered with clarity and elegance, their expressions and proximity conveying intimacy, protection, and quiet strength. Floral elements and patterned headwraps introduce cultural nuance and visual rhythm, while the layered composition reinforces a sense of lineage and enduring connection. Executed in 1999, this painting reflects Dambreville’s mature approach within contemporary Haitian art, where classical portrait sensibility meets narrative depth. The work was commissioned by Miles Cummings for his wife Emillita, a detail that significantly enhances its historical and emotional significance. This commissioned context situates the painting not only as a work of art, but as a personal tribute, elevating its importance for collectors interested in provenance and narrative authenticity. The painting is in good condition and comes from a private collection in Toronto, from which it will be shipped. Its provenance, combined with its commissioned origin, positions it as a compelling and distinctive example of Haitian figurative painting. A certificate of authenticity will be issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery.
